Cyprus sends firefighting aircraft to Greece

The Republic of Cyprus has sent two aircraft to assist Greece in efforts to put out a series of wildfires that have broken out.

As extreme heat continues to blast large parts of Europe, the situation has escalated in Greece, where a series of wildfires are sweeping through the country.

Firefighters from across the continent have joined the Greeks’ efforts to combat the blazes across the country’s landscape: teams from Romania, Poland and Slovakia are due to arrive to help, while Israel has promised to send a pair of firefighting planes. Italian and French aircraft are already being used near Athens.

A written statement by Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that following the instructions of President Nikos Christodoulides, the Republic of Cyprus was sending two aircraft to provide assistance to Greece, to extinguish the raging fires, after a request from the Greek Government to the rescEU mechanism of the EU.

He added that the Air Tractor AT-802 aircraft that are located in Paphos will depart immediately to assist in the firefighting efforts.
