Hebestreit: Germany wants to see positive developments in Cyprus issue

Germany wants to see positive developments in the Cyprus issue, the country’s Government Spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit has said.

Referring President Nikos Christodoulides’ recent visit to Berlin, where he met with the German Chancellor, Hebestreit said the Cyprus issue and Greek-Turkish relations are issues where Berlin would like to see positive developments in the near future.

He noted that there are many bilateral issues between Greece and Turkey, "which we are trying to promote in a constructive manner".

Hebestreit also referred to a telephone conversation on 29 May between Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, noting that Turkey is an important regional power, with influence in various conflicts that exist in the region, and using that influence positively and constructively "is something we very much want to encourage Turkey to do".

He said that a range of issues were outlined during the phone call, though the two didn’t go into depth.
