Energy Minister outlines RES actions at IRENA Assembly in Abu Dhabi

Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michael Damianos, has presented the actions implemented by Cyprus to further promote Renewable Energy Sources in his interventions at the 16th Session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which took place in Abu Dhabi on 11 and 12 January.

Following a personal invitation from the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates and CEO of ADNOC Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the Cypriot Minister also attended, on Tuesday, 13 January the official opening ceremony of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, where he had the opportunity to exchange views with Ministers of other countries, as well as with senior executives of international organisations and businesses, a Ministry press release said here today.

In his interventions during the IRENA Assembly, Damianos "presented the policies, measures and actions implemented by Cyprus to further promote Renewable Energy Sources, highlighting also the particular challenges that the country faces as an isolated electricity system in the context of the energy transition."

Moreover, the press release adds, he referred to the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council in the energy sector, emphasising the strengthening of the competitiveness and resilience of the energy system, the upgrading and digitalization of energy networks, as well as ensuring the provision of clean and affordable energy to citizens and businesses.

The Minister also participated in discussions concerning the decarbonization of industry, as well as the prospects and challenges arising from the use of artificial intelligence in the energy sector, in particular in matters of energy planning and network development.

On the sidelines of the 16th Session of the IRENA Assembly, the Minister had a series of bilateral contacts, including with the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates and CEO of ADNOC Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the Minister of Energy of Malta Miriam Dalli, the General Secretary of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) Osama Mobarez, as well as the President of the World Energy Council and former Director General of IRENA Adnan Z. Amin.
