The President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has expresses his sadness over the death of the former President of the Republic George Vassiliou through a written statement.
As Christodoulides states, "I was saddened to learn of the death of former President of the Republic George Vassiliou, whose name is synonomous with the effort for the economic development of our homeland, the social progress of our people and the modernisation of the Cypriot state in all sectors."
"George Vassiliou's contribition was decisive in achieving the top strategic goal of our country's accession to the European Union, while until the end of his life, he was dedicated to the effort to resolve the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our homeland," Christodoulides adds.
During the presidency of George Vassiliou, President Christodoulides continues, "policies were promoted that contributed to the extroversion of the Cypriot economy and business, to the consolidation of Cyprus as a centre of professional and administrative services, while a milestone in his achievements is the establishment of the University of Cyprus, which paved the way for the further development of higher education in our country."
"Cyprus has lost a universal citizen who expanded the international footprint of our homeland. On behalf of the state and our people, I bid him farewell with feelings of appreciation, respect and gratitude. I extend my sincere condolences to the wife, children and grandchildren of George Vassiliou," Christodoulides concludes.
