Cyprus is mourning the loss of former President of the Republic George Vassiliou, a personality who left a strong mark, like few others, on the country's political, economic and business developments.
In 2018, George Vassiliou was awarded the EY Honorary Award for his work and overall contribution to entrepreneurship, within the framework of the 5th KEBE Business Leader Awards.
"I certainly believe that leadership is something that one can learn from one's own experiences and lessons in life. Obviously we are all born with certain qualities and abilities, but we should never forget that people are not born leaders but they become leaders," he said in an interview with GOLD magazine on the occasion of his award.
He himself said that he had several influences, but singled out Nelson Mandela.
"We always try to learn from the way strong leaders around the world guide their countries. I do not want to compare myself to any of them but I will never forget the advice Nelson Mandela gave me when he pointed out that, 'To solve a problem, you must decide first of all that you wish to reach a solution, which implies negotiations and the need for compromise.'
He was ready to forgive his jailers for the 25 years he spent in prison and he succeeded in leading his country to the miracle of South Africa."
He also singled out important leading figures from Cyprus: "I do not like the word 'admire', but there are several leaders that I respect.
I prefer, however, to limit myself to Cyprus. People like Andreas Pittas, Andreas Papaellinas, Nicos Shacolas and others have succeeded in taking new initiatives, changing the environment in which we live and work, and providing new opportunities for employment and wealth creation. Among those who are no longer with us, I would point out the role and contribution of Stelios Ioannou and George Paraskevaides.”
While regarding the basic skills/qualities of an effective business leader, George Vassiliou had the following perception: "An effective business leader must be prepared to take decisions and implement them because they benefit his country as a whole and not just a particular group of people or voters."
