Charles Michel praises Cyprus, Greece and France for humanitarian aid to Gaza

Cyprus, Greece and France have been commended by European Council President Charles Michel for their efforts in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“We support Israel’s right to defend itself, and it must do so in line with international humanitarian law. The EU stands unequivocally for the protection of civilian life. Each civilian life matters, always and everywhere”, Michel said, speaking at the European Parliament in Brussels on 8 November.

He pointed out that a total siege is not in line with international law. “We call for humanitarian pauses and corridors in Gaza because humanitarian aid must get to those in need, urgently,” Michel stressed.

He further noted that “the more the situation deteriorates, the harder it will be to work towards a lasting peace in the future. With each passing hour, more lives are broken, more families torn apart”.

“We are working to help alleviate the suffering. I especially commend France, Greece, Cyprus and some others for their concrete actions, such as a maritime hospital and a maritime corridor. And at the meeting in Paris tomorrow we will discuss and decide on more support,” the President of the European Council said.

Michel also said that the EU can help the Middle East, while also continuing its strong support for Ukraine for as long as it takes.
