The replacement of airbags that have been recalled is still pending for 33,000 vehicles, out of the 81,000 vehicles registered in the initial list issued by the Road Transport Department (RTD) in February.
The RTD, speaking to CNA on 20 August, said that the figures provided had been updated the previous week. It noted, however, that among the 33,000 vehicles, 5,000 are immobilised and another 2,000 have been deregistered, and therefore the actual number of vehicles for which repair is still pending before the deadline, set for early October, is smaller.
Meanwhile, around 15,000 more vehicles were recalled for the same issue later on. The deadline to repair these vehicles is eight months from the day the owners were notified. According to the RTD, the repair process for these vehicles has already begun. It stressed, however, that priority is being given firstly to vehicles whose certificate of suitability has been withdrawn immediately and secondly to those on the initial list, as their deadline expires sooner.
The RTD is regularly updated by companies on the progress of replacing recalled airbags. CNA was told that several companies indicated that they have available appointments, and the RTD urges car owners who have not yet responded to do so.
