Members of the US Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) unit, summoned by President Nikos Christodoulides to assist in the investigation and assessment of how the recent fires in the mountainous area of Limassol were handled, have gotten to work.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the team will investigate the site of the fire, focusing on the point where the first smoke was reported. He added that they are expected to remain in Cyprus for 10 days and, upon completion of their investigation, will present an initial report on their findings, followed by a written report to the President of the Republic.
The US ATF unit is considered one of the most specialised and experienced fire/arson investigation teams in the world.
The US Embassy in Nicosia said the collaboration with Cyprus underscores the strength of bilateral bonds and exemplifies how partners support each other in times of crisis.
