New KIOS research sheds light on coronavirus spread in Cyprus

KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence has released the findings of a new study into the coronavirus spread across Cyprus in 2020 and 2021.

PhD Student Alexandros Dimitriou, Prof. Costas Pitris, and Assist. Prof. Panayiotis Kolios in collaboration with Ministry of Health officers Valentinos Silvestros and Elisavet Constantinou, have analyzed contact tracing data from March 2020 to May 2021 to uncover key insights into the spread of COVID-19 across Cyprus.

Among the key findings was that transmission often occurred among people of similar ages — or across 30-year generational gaps. Also, cross-district spread was more common between neighboring regions, but also reflected social trends, while lower transmission among older adults (50+) likely reflected the positive impact of vaccination and immunity.

“These insights highlight the value of network science in guiding public health strategies and strengthening pandemic preparedness,” KIOS said, posting the research ifndings on its LinkedIn page.
