Executive director of the United Nations Office for Project Services, UNOPS, Jorge Moreira da Silva said Cyprus' dispatch of a humanitarian aid consignment of 1,200 tons to Gaza was a crucial step in alleviating the suffering.
In a post on "X", he said that "under the UNOPS-managed UN 2720 Mechanism, a ship carrying 1,200 tons of aid has departed Cyprus, as part of the Amalthea Plan."
Da Silva added, "we need rapid, unhindered & safe flow of humanitarian aid for all civilians in need."
He also said the dispatch of the aid is "a crucial step in alleviating suffering in Gaza."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on 19 August that a humanitarian aid consignment of 1,200 tons departed from the port of Limassol on Monday evening in the framework of the Amalthea plan initiative.
The aid, which includes food items, particularly to cover the nutritional needs of children, originates from Cyprus (700 tons) through the CyprusAid mechanism of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while 500 tons constitute a donation from the Government of Malta, as well as from international humanitarian organisations based in the United States, Italy, the Sovereign Order of Malta, and Kuwait, with the Foreign Ministry noting that "the contribution of the Government of the United Arab Emirates to the entire effort is instrumental."
