Ioannou: Positive response from EU countries to Syria reassessment proposal

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said that several EU member states have responded positively to his proposal to reassess the status of Syrian regions, in a statement after the end of the House Internal Affairs Committee session on 1 February.

Responding to a question about the proposal he submitted to the EU Interior Ministers' Council regarding the status of Syrian regions that would allow the repatriation of Syrian migrants in certain areas deemed to be safe, Ioannou said that he has put forward this proposal since last summer.

"There has been a positive response from several member states in private meetings, but no decision has yet been formally taken at EU level," the Interior Minister said, expressing the belief that a discussion for a re-evaluation should be launched.

"Already parts of Syria are being assessed by other organisations as safe areas. This is shared by other countries, but no decision has yet been taken at the European level," he concluded.
