Love Rat makes UK headlines as it gets second wind after streaming on Netflix

Love Rat, the thriller series filmed in Cyprus for the UK’s Channel 5 under the island’s film incentives scheme, has been receiving rave reviews since being streamed on Netflix.

Fans have taken to film review and catalogue site IMDb to admire the four-part series, initially seemingly some fun in the sun, which turns into a psychological thriller.

The Independent, was among those reporting on the thriller’s second wind, with the headline: “Binge-worthy British show about a scam holiday romance enters Netflix Top 10 as fans ‘left guessing until the very end’”. In the article, it mentions how “Netflix watchers are obsessed with a British thriller series about a woman who faces a romance scam”.

Daily Mail’s headline reads: “Netflix fans captivated by a British thriller 'full of twists and turns', gushing about how 'it kept them guessing until the very end' and binge-watching every episode in one sitting.”

Audio platform Rayo, meanwhile, reported that the “gripping thriller series” originally aired on Channel 5 back in March 2024, and is currently racking up a fresh wave of new fans, after the four-part drama landed on streaming service Netflix.

Digital Spy also had a story on it, under the headline: “Sally Lindsay's forgotten UK thriller jumps up the streaming chart after being added to Netflix”.

METRO reports that the series was added to Netflix, where it soared up the charts and became the third most watched programme on the streaming service in the UK.

Love Rat, first released to Channel 5 in March last year, follows Emma (Coronation Street's Sally Lindsay), a woman at a crossroads in later life.

Just divorced from husband Pete (Men Behaving Badly's Neil Morrissey) and estranged from her daughter, she grows tired of mundane everyday life.

In search of escape, she travels to Cyprus on holiday where she quickly embarks on a whirlwind romance with handsome, rich hotel owner Niko (Gerald Kyd) - but not all is as it seems.

Emma suddenly finds herself scammed out of her life savings - and enlists her ex to help get them back.
