European Parliament President Roberta Metsola spoke of a "true loss for Cyprus and Europe," referring to the death of former President of the Republic George Vassiliou.
In a post, in Greek, on X, Metsola said she had been sad to learn of Vassiliou's death.
She described him as, "A political leader who paved the way for Cyprus' accession to the European Union and worked tirelessly for peace and modernisation," adding his death was "A true loss for Cyprus and Europe."
Metsola also expressed her sincere condolences to his family and the people of Cyprus.
