President in Brussels for European Council summit

President Nikos Christodoulides is in Brussels on 6 March to participate in an extraordinary European Council summit focused on the developments in Ukraine.

The EU leaders will discuss the developments in Ukraine and the current situation in the country during their midday summit, with the online participation of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

A working lunch will follow, during which issues related to the defence of the EU and the need for greater strategic autonomy of the Union will be discussed.

Referring to the European Council session as he spoke to journalists on 5 March, President Christodoulides said: “If we want to rise as the European Union, if we want to talk about the strategic autonomy of the EU, we must finally make decisions.” At the same time, he expressed his satisfaction with the announcements made by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on the defence package.

Already, he continued, "instructions have been given to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence, to the Secretariat dealing with European programmes, so that we can see how the Republic of Cyprus can utilise the package concerning lending in particular", adding that the Republic of Cyprus has not overstepped the fiscal rules, maintaining a public debt at 68% with a downward trend.

A statement from the Presidency said that before the '27' summit, the President of the Republic will participate in the summit of the European People's Party.
