Cyprus Interior Ministry is examining a "very large number" of objections to do with election candidates in cooperation with the Law Office, Chief Returning Officer Elikkos Elia has said.
Elia was speaking following the 6 May submission of candidacies for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Asked about the broader electoral process, Elia said the most challenging elections in recent years were those held in June 2024, due to the large number of simultaneous electoral procedures and ballots.
“We managed to carry out the elections as they should have been conducted,” he said, adding that the process this year is expected to be more manageable, although elections are always a complex task.
Referring to the objections submitted in recent days, Elia said the authorities are reviewing whether candidates meet the legal requirements to stand in the parliamentary elections.
“The issue under examination is whether a candidate is entitled and qualified to run,” he said.
