President invited to extraordinary EUCO on Ukraine, EU defence

President Nikos Christodoulides said he has been invited to participate in the extraordinary European Council to be held next week in Brussels which will discuss developments in Ukraine and the need to strengthen member states’ defence and security.

He also said that the Republic of Cyprus would soon proceed with its own plans, considering, as a precondition, the participation of Cypriot companies in the production of any armament programmes purchased by the Republic of Cyprus.

According to a statement by the Presidency, speaking to the members of the Defence Industry Council whom he received at the Presidential Palace in the presence of Defence Minister, Vassilis Palmas, President Christodoulides said he was invited to participate in an extraordinary European Council, to be held next week in Brussels, noting that the developments in Ukraine would be discussed.

He added that the European Council will also discuss the need to strengthen the member states’ defence and security, it adds.

He also referred to the unanimous approach of the EU members for strengthening the European defence industry through cooperation and partnerships among all member states, it notes.

The President also added that the Republic of Cyprus would soon proceed with its own plans, taking into account, as a clear precondition, the participation of Cypriot companies in the production of any armament programmes purchased by the Republic of Cyprus.
