President and UNSG discuss resuming Cyprus talks

President Nikos Christodoulides and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have held a telephone conversation to exchange views on the next steps in efforts to resume the Cyprus talks and agreed to stay in contact on the matter.

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said in a statement that the UNSG reaffirmed his commitment to finding a solution of the Cyprus problem within the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

President Christodoulides, in turn, reaffirmed his readiness to resume the negotiating process from where it left off in Crans Montana. He too stressed that any solution must be within the framework of the UNSC’s resolutions. He also pointed to the added value of appointing an Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Cyprus issue.

Christodoulides went on to update the Secretary-General on his contacts with European leaders and the heads of the EU institutions, regarding his proposal for a more active EU involvement in the efforts to lift the deadlock and resume the Cyprus talks on the agreed basis, in support of UN efforts.

They also exchanged views on the next steps in resuming the talks and agreed to stay in contact, the Spokesman concluded.
