Minister hails Blue Flags awards to Cyprus beaches and marinas

Μinister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou has welcomed the awarding of 66 Blue Flags to 64 beaches and two marinas on the island, describing it as an important honour.

Delivering a speech at the award ceremony that took place at the famous Fig Tree Bay in the Famagusta district on 4 June, Panayiotou said that the Blue Flag is perhaps the most recognisable international symbol of a quality beach and has a strict framework of specifications and continuous control.

Among the key elements evaluated are the safety of bathers, valid and adequate information for visitors, the cleanliness and orderliness of the coastal area, as well as the protection of the natural environment and the cultivation of environmental awareness, the Minister said.

The Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia received 18 Blue Flags, the Municipality of Ayia Napa 16, the Municipality of Amathus 9, the Municipality of Paphos 6, the Municipality of Hierokipia 3, the Municipality of Larnaca 3 and the Municipality of Akamas 2.

The Community Councils of Oroklini, Zygi, Pentakomo, Parekklisia, Episkopi, Pissouri, Lempa and the marinas of Limassol and Ayia Napa received one Blue Flag each.

Mayor of Paralimni – Deryneia, George Nicolettos, noted the importance of the award for Cyprus tourism.

Annita Demetriadou, Director of the Quality Assurance Directorate of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism,  recalled that arrivals in 2024 exceeded 4 million, while tourism revenues are estimated at 3,209.4 million and showed an increase of 7.3% compared to 2023.

Michalis Ierides, Secretary General of Cymepa and President of the National Blue Flag Judge said that evaluation visits at the beaches will take place in the coming weeks and in the event that some criteria are not met, then the Flags will be suspended.
