Cyprus moves to modernise Dhekelia power station with €9m Siemens deal

The Electricity Authority (EAC) has paid a €9 million advance to German multinational Siemens for the purchase of three generators, as part of efforts to upgrade the Dhekelia power station.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, EAC Chairman George Petrou confirmed that the agreement provides for the delivery of the first generator in April 2028, the second in August 2028, and the third in May 2029.

Petrou explained that the new industrial-type units will be able to connect to the grid within just five minutes, offering significantly greater flexibility compared to the existing machines, which require extended preparation time and cannot easily be taken offline. “This gives us the ability to shut them down when needed,” he noted.

He added that the current ageing units at Dhekelia must be withdrawn by December 31, 2029.

As part of the broader upgrade plan, EAC is also proceeding with the installation of energy storage systems at the site. Batteries with a total storage capacity of 80 megawatts have already been ordered and are expected to become operational in the third quarter of 2027.

Additional battery storage projects are also in the pipeline. A 100-megawatt system is planned for Moni, currently at the stage of securing planning and building permits, while a separate study is underway for a 250-megawatt storage facility in Vasilikos.
