The important role played by the Republic of Cyprus in the Council of Europe was highlighted by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, who met today with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, as part of his official visit to Cyprus.

According to a Presidency statement, welcoming Berset to the Presidential Palace, the President of the Republic said that the Republic of Cyprus attaches great importance to the Council of Europe, while noting the importance of implementing the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights.

He added that among the issues to be discussed today are the five Greek Cypriots who are being held "hostage," as he said, in the Turkish occupied territories, issues related to the Cyprus problem, such as the missing persons and property, but also issues related to the illegal invasion of Ukraine, issues concerning Armenia, Azerbaijan, as well as the situation in the Middle East.

It is added that, on his part, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe said, among other things, that he and the President of the Republic are in complete agreement, noting that the rule of law and democracy must prevail and human rights must be protected.

He added that these are collective commitments of the Council of Europe, while highlighting the very strong role played by the Republic of Cyprus in the Council of Europe, noting that Cyprus' support is greatly appreciated.
