Law Office heads discuss rule of law issues with EU Commissioner McGrath
07:55 - 26 June 2025

Issues related to Rule of Law, in relation to the European Commission's 2025 Rule of Law Report on Cyprus, currently being drafted, were discussed by Attorney General George Savvides and Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides with Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath in Brussels.
The recent meeting, according to a press release from the Law Office, provided the opportunity for Cyprus to brief the Commissioner on the actions taken to implement the recommendations included in the report, as well as the latest developments in relation to the bills for the reform of the legal system.
McGrath was also informed by the Attorney General about the measures taken in relation to the termination of the Cyprus Investment Program.
In light of a ruling against Malta, an exchange of views took place on the next steps, so that all necessary actions are taken with a view to the Commission filing the relevant infringement, which is pending against the Republic of Cyprus.
In this context, further consultation was agreed between the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Cyprus to the EU and the Commissioner's office, regarding the actions required to be taken in this direction.
Savvides and Angelides informed the Commissioner on the priorities that Cyprus will set in the field of criminal law, in its EU Presidency the first half of 2026.
Savvides extended an invitation to the Commissioner to visit Cyprus, in the context of the high-level meeting on the Rule of Law.
