Health Minister Michalis Damianos, is participating in the work of the 74th meeting of the Regional Commission (RC74) of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe, taking place from 29 - 31 October, in Copenhagen.

Damianos, in his intervention during the Plenary debate, pointed out the importance of WHO's coordinating role and Cyprus' commitment to invest in public health, including funding the operation of the WHO Country Office, in Cyprus.

He pointed out that the global health situation faces many challenges, which are exacerbated by ongoing military conflicts, the emergence of the monkeypox epidemic, persistent inequalities and the effects of climate change.

The Minister made specific proposals, such as investing in primary care, strengthening public health infrastructure, capacity building and adopting digital health innovations.

He spoke of the importance of a universal health coverage, which was successfully adopted by Cyprus in 2019 with the introduction of the General Health System.

Damianos advocated the adoption by the Region of the "Preparedness 2.0" strategy, as well as the new Action Plan for the Regional Emergency Medical Teams.

The Minister held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of RC74 with the Minister of Health of Latvia Hosams Abu Meri, where a possible collaboration was discussed, based on his proposal regarding the joint supply of medicines.
