PathoCERT exercise for surface and urban water contamination wraps

The PathoCERT exercise for surface and urban water contamination was successfully completed in Limassol.

The exercise, organised by the Cyprus Civil Defence and KIOS Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence, was activated by a simulated high-magnitude earthquake causing contamination in the drinking water infrastructure.

The exercise allowed first responders and water operators (Limassol Water Board and Sewerage and Drainage Board, Water Development Department) to test various new technologies in the field, including: AI-based technologies for risk assessment and degree of danger, autonomous drones with remote sampling capability, electronic rapid-tests for pathogen detection in less than 1 minute, information management, processing, and exchange systems, and simulation and decision support systems.

Valuable feedback will be used to improve the tech for future pilots in Bulgaria and South Korea, KIOS said.
