The Department of Agriculture has submitted applications for 'Athienou Bread' and 'Athienou Loukoumi' (a wedding delight) to be examined and considered by the European Commission for registration as Protected Geographical Indications.
In a press release from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, it is noted that the two applications have been examined at the national level and have received a favourable decision from the Director of the Department of Agriculture.
A relevant announcement of this decision was published on 25 September, 2026, in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus, along with the specifications of the two products.
According to the Ministry, these specific applications concern two products of Cypriot gastronomy, "of exceptional quality, which enjoy great fame."
The two applications are to be examined by the European Commission, and it is expected that they will receive a favorable decision within 2027.
