A decrease in both the number and value of bounced cheques was recorded in the first eight months of 2026 compared with the corresponding period of 2025, according to data on registrations in the preliminary list released on Wednesday by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC).
Specifically, from January through August 2026, 128 bounced cheques were registered, compared with 161 in the corresponding period of 2025, representing a decrease of 20.5%. The total value of bounced cheques fell to €315,581, from €365,490 in the eight months of 2025, recording a decrease of 13.7%.
In August 2026, however, 27 bounced cheques were recorded, compared with 16 in August 2025, marking an increase of 68.8%. Their value, on the other hand, fell significantly to €27,092, from €52,891 in August 2025, a decrease of 48.8%.
Regarding legal and natural persons registered in the preliminary list, during the first eight months of 2026, 52 legal persons and 24 natural persons were registered, bringing the total number of persons to 76. In the corresponding period of 2025, 46 legal persons and 36 natural persons had been registered, bringing the total to 82 persons.
In August 2026, 4 legal persons and 2 natural persons were registered, bringing the total number of persons to 6. In August 2025, 2 legal persons and 4 natural persons had been registered, also bringing the total to 6 persons.
Meanwhile, registrations in the Central Information Register (CIR) for issuers of bounced cheques totalled 86 persons from January through August 2026, compared with 80 in the corresponding period of 2025. The data concern registrations and not deletions that have taken place and, therefore, the number of persons does not reflect deletions from the CIR.
In the preliminary list, the total number of bounced cheques for 2026 up to August stands at 128, compared with 213 for the whole of 2025, while their value amounts to €315,581, compared with €630,249 for the whole of 2025.
