Christodoulides: Decisions in the coming weeks as the internal process regarding natural gas agreement near completion

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, has received a delegation from US multinational energy corporation Chevron, led by Javier La Rosa, the company's President of Base Assets and Emerging Countries (BAEC).

During the Wednesday, 29 April meeting, the President stated that the internal process in relation to the agreement on Cyprus natural gas is close to completion, noting that, in light of international and regional developments, the need to accelerate the implementation of the energy plans of the Republic of Cyprus has become even more urgent.

He also stressed that the promotion of the energy plans of the Republic of Cyprus is of particular importance both for the wider region and for the European Union, at a time when energy security, diversification of sources and Europe's energy autonomy are at the heart of the European agenda.

President Christodoulides noted that this issue was also included in the work of the informal European Council, which took place in Cyprus last week, underlining the geostrategic importance of the Eastern Mediterranean for the energy security and perspective of the EU.

He also mentioned that within the coming weeks, internal procedures are expected to be completed and decisions will be taken by the Council of Ministers as part of the action plan that had been set.

The President of the Republic added that the issue had also been discussed with the President of Egypt, on the sidelines of the informal European Council, a fact that confirms the importance of regional cooperation for the promotion of specific energy projects and the interconnection of the region's energy prospects with the needs of Europe.
