MPs approve reduction in fuel consumer tax from 4 April

The implementation of the government measure to reduce the excise duty on fuel will begin on 4 April.

The measure, which was presented to the House  Finance Committee in the form of an emergency measure, was also voted on in the Plenary on the same day and will come into effect just after midnight.

The measure concerns the reduction of consumption tax by 8.33 cents per liter on gasoline and 6 cents per liter on diesel.

The Plenary of the House of Representatives approved, unanimously, with 46 votes in favour, the law to reduce the excise tax rate on motor fuels, with the aim of relieving consumers from increased costs.

The law was submitted by the Government following the announcement of measures to support the economy due to the consequences of the conflict in Iran.

The regulation provides for a reduction in excise duty until the end of June, with the total fiscal cost amounting to €18.6 million, while upon the expiry of the measure, the possibility of its extension will be reviewed.

The reduction of VAT on electricity to 5% for all household consumers was already published by decree, will enter into force from the date of 1 May, 2026 and be valid until 31 March, 2027.
