Mobile desalination units in Moni start gradual operation on a "trial basis"
08:16 - 23 July 2025

One of 13 mobile desalination units provided by the United Arab Emirates and which were recently installed in Moni, Limassol district, have started operating on a trial basis, following technical tests and the resolution of problems that arose.
The Water Development Department, in a press release on the evening of 22 July, said, "The unit produced good quality water, while the process is still on a trial basis."
Earlier on Tuesday, Water Development Department Acting Director Giorgos Kazantzis told CNA that final tests had been underway on the 13 mobile desalination units, adding that it was expected that later in the day, the first one would start operating, followed in stages by the others.
In a post on X, Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Minister Maria Panayiotou also referred to the successful water production from the desalination units, thanking "everyone who contributed in the implementation of this demanding project."
All crews have been performing tests since Monday 21 July, Kazantzis said.
He explained that the water from the units will be directed to Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta districts so that available water from Kouris dam can be used in Limassol.
Replying to a question, Kazantzis said that the process of installing the mobile desalination units was "extremely complex" and took place in a very short time-frame in cooperation with the company, Water Development Department staff and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.
