'Smart Cyprus' project implementation begins

The Smart Cyprus project, a national initiative that aims to shape a modern, green and sustainable development model for the entire island of Cyprus, has been launched.

Cities and communities which - through technology - manage resources more efficiently, enhance public safety and serve citizens effectively, the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy says in a press release.

According to the competent Deputy Ministry, the first phase of the project includes the implementation of three smart vertical solutions, such as smart lighting, smart parking and smart waste management, as well as the creation of a relevant application for mobile devices, which will enhance communication and service to citizens.

This phase is funded with €35 million from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and provides for compensation for existing investments that have already been implemented by various Municipalities.

In his address at the 22 July launch event, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Dr. Nicodemos Damianou, underlined the strategic role of the project in shaping a digital, green and resilient Cyprus.

As he pointed out, “Smart Cyprus is not just another technological intervention, but a horizontal, central infrastructure, a platform, designed from the outset based on the principles of interoperability and scalability, which aims to strengthen the smart, digital transition across the island.”
