Meeting under President on defence strengthening via EU-US programmes

Decisions regarding the utilisation of EU financial instruments and US programmes to which the Republic of Cyprus now has access were taken today at a ministerial meeting chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides.

According to a written statement by Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the meeting was attended by the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Defence, the Minister of Justice and Public Order and the Deputy Minister for European Affairs.

As stated, "the main topic of the meeting was the utilisation of these programmes in conjunction with medium-term planning for the needs of strengthening the deterrent power and defence capabilities of the Republic of Cyprus."

Letymbiotis said that during the meeting, "it was decided in principle that the Republic of Cyprus would make use of the SAFE Financial Framework. To this end, a team of European Commission experts will visit Cyprus in July for further discussions."

It was also decided to explore the possibility of utilising the defence investment mechanism offered by the European Investment Bank and to submit specific requests to the United States to secure relevant equipment through the Excess Defense Articles and the Foreign Military Sales programmes, which the Republic of Cyprus may make use of following a decision of the US on 15 January 2025.

In the context of the above, the Republic of Cyprus will give priority to purchases from companies in the Cypriot defence industry, while, taking into account the recent EU decision on the need for further investment in the defence sector, the Republic of Cyprus will contribute to the efforts of Cypriot companies to promote their defence products, the Government Spokesperson concluded.
