The issues of the green transition and the role of energy in the development of cities were addressed by the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Cyprus Michael Damianos during the 'Climate Neutral Blue Cities by 2030: Accelerating Local Change under the EU Cities and Ocean Missions - Limassol on the Path to Climate Neutrality' conference.
During his speech, he highlighted the importance of the green transition as a key pillar for the resilience and competitiveness of the economy, noting that "climate neutrality is now a practical roadmap for cities and especially for Limassol."
He made particular reference to the modernisation of energy infrastructure, explaining that the promotion of "smart" networks, the digitalisation of the electricity system and the strengthening of energy storage are crucial elements for the greater use of renewable sources, while he also underlined the importance of energy communities that allow citizens to produce and consume their own energy, reducing costs for households and businesses.
At the same time, he stressed that the Ministry is proceeding with specific support plans, such as energy upgrade programmes for buildings and the installation of photovoltaics, highlighting the prospects created for the economy, as well as the challenges related to energy consumption in the building sector.
In closing, Damianos mentioned that the port of Limassol also plays a key role in the transition by promoting the electrification of ships from shore, highlighting the need for coordinated actions and collaborations, within the framework of an overall strategy for sustainable development and strengthening the economy.
The conference was organised by the Limassol Municipality.
