UK Minister of State for Europe, North America and Overseas Territories to visit Cyprus

The United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Europe, North America and Overseas Territories Stephen Doughty will be visiting Cyprus from Wednesday, 18 March.

As the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned, Doughty is set to arrive at Paphos airport in the afternoon and will immediately visit the British Base in Akrotiri.

On Thursday, 19 March, the UK Minister will meet with Cyprus' Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos in Nicosia, a meeting to be followed by press statements.

He will also have separate meetings with the President of DISY and the SG of AKEL before his departure the same day.

In the early hours of 2 March, a Shahed-type drone struck military facilities in the British Bases, hosted in Akrotiri, in the southern tip of Cyprus, causing minor damage, amid regional turmoil following the US-Israeli attacks on Iran.

The attack by the Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicle, believed to be linked to Hezbollah operating in Lebanon, prompted heightened security measures, while several countries, including Greece and France said they were deploying warships, aircraft and other air defence assets to shield Cyprus.

The UK also announced the dispatch of a warship. Nicosia reiterates that it has no involvement in the wider Middle East conflict.
