CUT Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis among top 0.5% scientists worldwide

The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence at the Cyprus University of Technology has announced that its Managing Director, Prof. Diofantos Hadjimitsis, has been ranked among the top 0.5% of scientists worldwide, according to the most recent 2024 ScholarGPS rankings.

The rankings were published on 17 May, 2025.

As stated, the prestigious recognition highlights Prof. Hadjimitsis’ outstanding scientific contributions in the fields of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Remote Sensing, Satellite Imagery, and Cultural Heritage, reinforcing the Centre’s position as a hub of academic excellence.

According to the statement, the ScholarGPS platform offers the first comprehensive quantitative ranking of scientists and research institutions worldwide, covering more than 14 scientific fields, 177 disciplines, and over 350,000 specialties, based on publication counts, citation metrics, and h-index values—offering a unique perspective on scholarly excellence across both lifetime achievements and recent performance.

Based on data from more than 30 million scientific profiles at 55,000 institutions in more than 200 countries, Professor Hadjimitsis achieved leading positions globally, ranking 1,676 in Civil and Environmental Engineering, 27 in Cultural Heritage, and 39 in both Archaeological Site and Satellite Imagery. He is also placed 231st in Remote Sensing, while his recent work over the last five years continues to attract international attention, with top rankings such as 72nd place in Cultural Heritage and 257th in Remote Sensing.

It is added that Professor Hatzimitsis, in addition to his role as Managing Director of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, is full Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics at the Cyprus University of Technology, Vice President of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA), Coordinator of the EXCELSIOR H2020 Teaming Project, which has secured over €38 million in funding, and co-coordinator of NASA’s MEDRIN network, focusing on space research in the Eastern Mediterranean and former Vice Rector of Academic Affairs of the Cyprus University of Technology.

Under his leadership, the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence has become a driving force in Cyprus’ transformation into a regional space and innovation hub. Since its establishment in 2020 in Limassol, the Centre has employed over 100 researchers and has delivered high-level expertise in Earth Observation, Space Technology and Geoinformation. Its work supports sustainable development and environmental monitoring through advanced data analysis, remote sensing, and cutting-edge geospatial applications, it is further noted.
