07:40 - 30 June 2025

Cyprus remains a global leader in the use of solar energy for water heating, Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, George Papanastasiou has said.
Speaking during the recent Annual General and Election Meeting of the Cyprus Solar Energy Manufacturers Association, he noted that in 2023, the country ranked first in the EU in terms of installed collector area per capita.
According to Papanastasiou, the contribution of Renewable Energy Sources for heating and cooling purposes in Cyprus reached 42.75% in 2023, with the largest share coming from the exploitation of solar energy through the widespread use of solar water heating systems, a percentage that ranks Cyprus 9th among the 27 Member States.
The Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry, recognising the strategic importance of promoting the use of solar systems, has included the installation of such systems for water heating as an eligible cost for subsidies under the ‘Save-Upgrade’ scheme for homes and businesses, he continued, adding that through the RES and Energy Conservation Fund, the Grant Scheme for the replacement or installation of solar water heating systems in existing homes has been in place since 2008, with grants totalling over €15 million already paid.
He also highlighted the importance of appropriate training for human resources in the sector, saying that the Ministry is contributing to these efforts by certifying appropriate training providers and examination bodies and maintaining a Register of Solar System Installers who have received the required theoretical and practical training and sit relevant exams, with 59 installers currently registered.
The Annual General and Election Meeting of the Cyprus Solar Energy Manufacturers Association took place on 27 June.
