President stresses importance of coordination with Centers of Excellence

President Nikos Christodoulides received the Directors of the seven Centres of Excellence for Research and Innovation in Cyprus, stressing the importance of coordinating their actions.

The 29 May meeting was attended, among others, by Minister of Finance Makis Keravnos,  Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nicodemos Damianou, and Deputy Minister to the President, Irini Piki.

Speaking during the meeting, the President of the Republic said that "we should coordinate our actions" and added that he considers it "important" that the Centers are united.

"We have taken some actions during the last two years to commercialise research," he noted, adding that research must be present in society through commercialisation in order to have "the added value we want in society."

He stressed that “the most important asset is the human resources of our country," adding that “we want to bring them back to work in the Research and Innovation Centers and strengthen the ecosystem”.

Speaking on behalf of all the Centers of Excellence for Research and Innovation, Diophantos Hadjimitsis recalled that on Wednesday the Centers of Excellence signed a Memorandum of Understanding "for cooperation and promotion of research and innovation together, joining forces".

“We will support the work of the government to make Cyprus a regional hub of innovation and research for the coming years”, he added.

Hadjimitsis said that they are joining forces with the industry, social services, and civil society, and they stand by the industrial world to take products one step further.

He also welcomed “the major event in the United Kingdom” that took place recently for the repatriation of Cypriot researchers.
