‘Nicosia-Capital of Cyprus’ Initiative supports suggested traffic regulation for Makarios Avenue

The ‘Nicosia - Capital of Cyprus’ Initiative, in a recent announcement, stated has a positive view of the prospect of opening Makarios Avenue to environmentally friendly vehicles from both directions, as well as the operation of the avenue as a pedestrian street during the weekends, underlining that this can contribute substantially to enhancing mobility and visitors to the city centre.

The Initiative includes large groups, such as C.A. Papaellinas, Cyfield, ZARA, Columbia Restaurants, Zorbas, as well as the Aloupas Jewellers. Individuals, shopkeepers, lawyers, architects and other professionals are also taking part.

In the 21 April announcement, the Initiative states that this specific vehicle traffic regulation should only apply on weekdays, and at specific times of the day, in order to not jeopardise the smooth operation of the city centre and not to affect the quality of life of residents and the experience of visitors.

It adds that in addition to opening the avenue to environmentally friendly vehicles on weekdays, it is necessary to ensure easy and direct access to parking spaces, both on the avenue and in specific lanes, in order to restore the coherence of the city's commercial centre, which currently presents the image of a blocked-off area, with all roads leading to the central Avenue closed, something which exacerbates the impression of difficult access and parking problems.
