Transport Minister-Egypt's Ambassador discuss cooperation in ports, transport, shipping

The potential for strengthening cooperation in the field of maritime trade and transport and port management were discussed by Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades and the Ambassador of Egypt to Cyprus, Mohamed Zaazou.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Transport, during the 4 March meeting, held at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, an exchange of views took place on the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Egypt and the prospects for strengthening them, with an emphasis on the development of cooperation in the fields of ports, transport and shipping, it said. “The two sides discussed the possibilities of enhancing cooperation in the field of maritime trade, shipping and port management, recognising the strategic importance of these sectors for the economies of both countries,” it added.

It notes that the meeting took place “in a critical period”, following the signing of recent memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between the Republic of Cyprus and Egypt, which focus on strengthening cooperation in the sectors of transport, shipping and ports. The MoUs provide for joint projects and exchange of know-how, with a view to further improving cooperation and development in these sectors, it adds.

Vafeades also briefed the Ambassador about his Ministry’s initiatives and development plans in the transport and infrastructure sector in Cyprus, according to the announcement, while that the Ambassador expressed his country’s willingness for further strengthening cooperation in the sectors of transport, shipping and ports.
