Timeframe in place for Cyprus’ GSI participation, Papanastasiou tells MED9

Energy Minister George Papanastasiou told a summit in Larnaca that there is a specific timeframe in place for Cyprus’ participation in the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), though he refrained from offering any additional details.

Asked for an update on the project to connect the power grids of Cyprus and Crete during the 2nd MED9 Energy Ministerial Meeting in Larnaca, Papanastasiou referenced the timeframe’s existence, but said he didn’t wish to elaborate further.

He went on to refer to the many challenges in the project’s implementation, “that we will have to manage”.

Regarding the teleconference between the energy regulatory authorities of Cyprus and Greece, taking place on 23 September, the Minister said the agenda does not concern the issue directly, though it is something that needs to be discussed (it is understood that the teleconference will examine a request by the implementing body of the GSI, the Independent Power Transmission Operator, in relation to recoverable costs related to the project).
