Ministry of Agriculture: Cyprus reaffirms cooperation with FAO on climate change

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Andreas Gregoriou, expressed the Republic of Cyprus’ commitment to close cooperation with all members of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to address the impacts of climate change.

Gregoriou participated in the 44th FAO General Assembly in Rome, accompanied by the Director of the Department of Agriculture, Makis Antoniades.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Agriculture, addressing the General Assembly on Monday, Gregoriou stressed the Republic of Cyprus’ commitment to work closely with all FAO members and partners through coordinated policy interventions, innovation, and regional cooperation, in order to effectively tackle the effects of climate change, ensuring a sustainable future, resilient agri-food systems, and food security for all.

On the sidelines of the FAO General Assembly, the Cypriot delegation held a meeting with the FAO Director-General, Qu Dongyu, as well as other officials of the Organization, whom they informed about the increasing challenges faced by the agricultural sector in Cyprus as a result of climate change and the severe drought affecting the country.
