In a press release, CySTAT says that total employment in the broad public sector in the 4th quarter of 2023 reached 75,361 persons. The employment in General Government was 69,552 and in the Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies 5,809 persons.

In General Government, which consists of the Government, Non-Profit Organizations and Local Authorities, total employment reached 54,168, 10,855 and 4,529 persons respectively.

Employment in the broad public sector increased by 2,765 persons (3.8%) compared to the same quarter of 2022. Employment in Central Government increased by 2,628 persons (4.2%), in Local Authorities by 101 persons (2.3%) and in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies by 36 persons (0.6%).

Employment in Non-profit Organizations (NPOs) increased by 22.0%, which is attributed to the transfer of Hourly Paid Workers from the Ministry of Health (Government) to the State Health Services Organisation (NPO), as from January 2023.

Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2023, employment in the broad public sector was up by 3,054 persons (4.2%). This is mainly attributed to the increase of the Educational Service staff (Government), due to the abolition of the purchase of services regime in the supporting programmes of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth in effect for the school year 2023-2024.

Employment in Local Authorities and in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies remained stable in comparison to the 3rd quarter of 2023.
