ΙN Βusiness Awards: Lifetime Achievement Award for Christos Mavrellis

Christos Mavrellis, Senior Consultant at Chrysses Demetriades & Co. LLC and Chairman of the Cyprus Gaming and Casino Supervision Commission was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the recent IN Business Awards.

Societies have always grown thanks mainly to their members who were not satisfied with just their own progress, but at the same time also worked for the common good and Mavrellis was chosen as the award’s recipient because he is just such a person.

A renowned lawyer, who, in addition to the wide range of legal matters that he handled from the highest levels of the profession, he also repeatedly participated in the modernisation of legislation itself.

Mavrellis is someone who always fought to get Cyprus what it deserves, especially in the field of services and attracting investment, and an eminent member of society who was twice called to serve it through ministerial posts.

Christos Mavrellis received a law degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a master's degree in Maritime Law from University College London.

He has been practicing law for several decades. He is a Senior Consultant at Chrysses Demetriades & Co. LLC. The cases he undertakes are related, among others, to public law, semi-government and banking organisations, large companies, investments, and tax matters.

At the same time, he has participated in ad hoc committees for the restructuring of tax, shipping, and other legislations, as well as the legislative framework for attracting foreign investments, a field in which he has been active, serving for nine years as vice-president of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA) now known as Invest Cyprus.

Mavrellis also rose to the occasion when he was called to assume high state offices. In 1982 he was appointed Minister of Transport and Works, while from 1985 until February 1988 he served as Minister of Finance.

He was also the Secretary of the International Tax Planning Association, a member of the Senate of the Offshore Institute, and an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Today, he is the Chairman of the Cyprus Gaming and Casino Supervision Commission and a member of the Board of Directors of a number of public and private companies.
