Strong labour market performance reflects economy’s dynamism, Central Bank of Cyprus says

The strong performance of the Cypriot labour market reflects the dynamism of the economy and the continued demand for services and investment, the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) says in its October 2026 Economic Brief entitled “The Labour Market in Cyprus: Resilience and Challenges.”

At the same time, the CBC notes in its brief that the labour market faces challenges linked to certain labour supply constraints stemming from demographic trends and skills shortages.

“Preserving its resilience requires the continuation and expansion of policies that strengthen labour market participation, skills development and productivity,” it stresses.

According to the CBC, the labour market is a key indicator of an economy’s resilience and prospects, as it is closely linked to growth, productivity and social welfare.

It adds that the case of Cyprus is of particular interest, as the labour market has remained remarkably resilient despite successive external shocks since the pandemic, including the energy crisis, inflationary pressures, tighter financial conditions and persistently elevated geopolitical uncertainty.

It also notes that unemployment declined to a historic low of 3,6% of the labour force in 2026Q2, employment continues to expand, inflows of foreign workers remain significant, and labour force participation among Cypriots has been maintained at high levels.

Remarking that monitoring the labour market is particularly important, the CBC points out that, on the one hand, a resilient labour market strengthens the economy’s ability to absorb external shocks and support domestic demand.

On the other hand, it adds, “under conditions of near full employment, such as those currently prevailing in the Cypriot labour market, issues related to labour availability, skills adequacy and productivity are becoming increasingly important for the economy’s growth prospects, as sustaining economic growth is becoming increasingly dependent on continued employment growth and improvements in labour productivity.”
