How Ablebook's Andreas Vasiliou and Symeon Stylianou have created an inclusive digital ecosystem

In an era where technology is called upon to provide answers to essential social challenges, the Cypriot startup Ablebook stands out as one of the most characteristic examples of innovation with a social dimension.

With a focus on accessibility and inclusion, the company has created a comprehensive digital ecosystem that facilitates the daily lives of people with disabilities, while promoting their equal participation in social and professional life. Ablebook’s Founder & CEO, Andreas Vasiliou, and the company’s CBO and Co-founder, Symeon Stylianou, talk about the journey from a personal experience of exclusion to an initiative that aspires to change the way society perceives and implements accessibility.

From personal experience to a digital ecosystem of inclusion

The story of Ablebook begins with a personal experience that turned into a social mission. Andreas Vasiliou, Founder & CEO of the company, found himself faced with significant obstacles in his attempt to enter the job market after completing his studies. Despite his academic qualifications, his disability often caused him to be excluded, which led Vasiliou to seek new ways to address the challenges that thousands of people with disabilities experience every day.

This experience highlighted a series of problems that extend far beyond the workplace. The lack of information about accessible spaces, difficulties in transportation, limited access to services and social isolation constitute a reality that continues to affect a large number of citizens.

Through this realisation, the idea of Ablebook was born, a platform designed by people who know, firsthand, about the challenges of disability and understand the real needs of the community.

The contribution of Symeon Stylianou, Co-founder and Chief Business Officer of the company, was decisive. Their shared vision of an inclusive society, with equal opportunities for participation for all, formed the foundation on which Ablebook was built and gradually evolved into a comprehensive digital accessibility ecosystem.

Technology born from real needs

The creators of Ablebook emphasise that their personal experiences have been the most important source of inspiration for the development of the platform's services. As they point out, disability affects almost every aspect of everyday life, from transportation and access to services to work, entertainment and social participation.

Realising that the biggest obstacle is often not the disability itself but the lack of information, inadequate planning, and the absence of appropriate tools, they transformed these experiences into specific technological solutions.

This is how AbleMap, AbleCard, AbleJobs and the rest of the ecosystem's services were created, with each function responding to a real need of people with disabilities.

From the IDEA Innovation Center to collaboration with more than 200 organisations

An important milestone in the company's journey was its participation in the IDEA Innovation Center, where its founders received guidance, training and support to transform an idea into a sustainable business activity.

Of decisive importance was also the trust shown by the first businesses that supported the project, including EKO, McDonald's, Infocredit Group and Cyta.

Today, Ablebook collaborates with more than 200 businesses, 13 municipalities, ministries and organisations, which, as its co-founders note, proves that accessibility is gradually evolving into a strategic priority for more and more organisations.

The creation of AbleMap and the evolution of the platform

One of the biggest obstacles the company faced in its early stages was the lack of reliable accessibility data. Even finding information about disabled parking spaces proved extremely difficult, as there was no centralised and organised database.

This finding led to the creation of AbleMap, an interactive accessibility map that formed the basis for the development of all subsequent services.

Subsequently, the ecosystem expanded with the Ablebook Portal, AbleCard, as well as services such as AbleJobs, AbleFix, AbleActivities and AbleBook&Go, transforming Ablebook from a mapping application into a comprehensive platform supporting the daily lives of people with disabilities.

The distinctions that validated the company's course

The company's progress has also been accompanied by significant distinctions. In 2023, Ablebook was honoured with the CCCI's Social Contribution Award and the OEB's Social Innovation Award. In 2024, the Youth Award for the Elimination of Social Discrimination followed, while in 2025 the company was recognised by the European Union as an Inclusive Pioneer and presented its work at the SME Assembly in Denmark.

For its founders, these distinctions are not simply recognition of a business success, but confirmation that innovation can function as a tool for social change.

When technology becomes an everyday tool

User response has been extremely positive since the platform’s first years of operation. Many users and their families report that access to reliable accessibility information has allowed them to move around with greater confidence, visit new places, participate in activities, and gain greater independence in their daily lives.

At the same time, businesses, municipalities, and organisations began to approach Ablebook themselves, looking for ways to improve their accessibility. According to the company's founders, that was the moment when it became clear that the platform had transcended the boundaries of a simple application and had evolved into an agent of social change.

An ecosystem of solutions for more autonomy

Ablebook's philosophy is based on providing practical solutions for everyday needs. Through AbleJobs, users can search for jobs in companies that adopt inclusive practices, while AbleActivities offers information on accessible activities and events.

At the same time, AbleBook&Go and AbleFix enhance users' autonomy, offering tools that facilitate their participation in social life.

Thus, through a single platform, a user can locate accessible parking spaces, search for restaurants, find out about events, take advantage of AbleCard privileges and seek new professional opportunities.

The big bet of the next day

Despite the significant progress that has been made in recent years, the co-founders of Ablebook believe that the biggest gap still lies in the transition from theory to practice.

They point out that having policies and regulations is not enough when their implementation remains incomplete. At the same time, they underline that accessibility is still often treated as a compliance obligation rather than a fundamental human right.

The collaboration with Cyta and the next steps

As part of Cyta's Digital Inclusion initiative, Ablebook participates in the development of the "Ablebook for All" project, which utilises artificial intelligence technologies, 3D mapping and smart accessibility services to enhance independent living.

The collaboration is part of Cyta's strategic action for digital inclusion, '#I'mEqualHere' (#ΕίμαιΙσότιμαΕδώ), which aims to reduce digital inequalities and strengthen the equal participation of all citizens in the digital world.

Both sides believe that this collaboration demonstrates the potential that is created when businesses, social enterprises and organizations join forces to produce solutions with a substantial social impact.

Looking ahead, Ablebook plans to further invest in artificial intelligence, Smart Cities technologies and the international expansion of its model to other European countries. At the same time, it will continue to develop partnerships with municipalities, universities, businesses and organisations that share the same vision.

For its founders, the ultimate goal is not only to grow a successful company, but to harness technology to create a society in which no person is excluded from work, education, culture, or daily life due to the obstacles created by the environment around them.

"Disability is not what limits people. The real barriers are those created by society. At Ablebook, we don't just build technology; we build the bridges that connect people to the opportunities they deserve. Because accessibility is not a privilege of the few, but a right for all," Andreas Vassiliou & Symeon Stylianou, Co-Founders of Ablebook, state.
