Government: Cyprus remains a factor of stability and focuses on diplomacy

The Republic of Cyprus remains a factor of stability and focuses on diplomacy, a government source has said.

"What is of importance and is absolutely clear, is the role of the Republic of Cyprus. Cyprus does not threaten anyone and is not a factor of military escalation in the region. On the contrary, it has functioned over time as a pillar of stability, security and cooperation and as a bridge between the European Union and the wider Middle East," the same source continued, speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) following a Financial Times report with references to a possible Iranian retaliation in the event of a new American attack.

The government source pointed out that "the Republic of Cyprus maintains open diplomatic channels with Iran as well. In the context of these contacts, the real facts, positions and role of our country are conveyed with clarity and precision."

Our positions, the source added, in relation to issues concerning the British Bases in Cyprus, are known and have been stated where appropriate.

Besides, the source stressed, "the Republic of Cyprus itself has been suffering the consequences of a military invasion and illegal occupation by Turkey for 52 years now. We therefore know better than many what the use of force, aggression and violation of international law mean."

"Cyprus chooses diplomacy, stability and de-escalation. This was and remains our role in the region," the source concluded.
