Evangelia Psara on how N. Psaras Construction combines experience with fresh perspectives in the workplace for its 250 employees

Since its founding by Nikos Psaras in 1957, N. Psaras Construction has evolved into one of the island’s best-known construction companies.

Highlighting the qualities that have kept the business operating for more than half a century, Compliance & Administration Manager Evangelia Psara explains that, “From the outset, the company was built on three core values, which continue to guide us today: consistency, reliability and respect for the client.”

The company is active primarily in private projects, spanning everything from building developments to complex infrastructure works, with an approach rooted in engineering expertise, innovation and sustainability. “In recent years, growth has been both significant and intentional,” says Psara, referring to the fact that N. Psaras Construction currently employs 250 people, with a “deliberate effort” being made to balance experience with new perspectives. She notes that this goal is evident in the numbers – the average age of the company’s engineers is 37, with women making up 15% of the workforce. “We actively integrate young professionals who bring fresh thinking and energy. This growth reflects both the expansion of our operations and our ongoing commitment to a dynamic and sustainable working environment,” she tells GOLD.

As for the company’s work culture, she describes it as being “fundamentally people-centred, recognising individuals first and professionals second” and “driven by transparency, open dialogue, respect and a genuine sense of belonging.” It operates an open-door approach, with teamwork considered a core value in which respect, appreciation and support are experienced in practice. Moreover, “Upskilling is embedded in our daily operations as a strategic priority. Every year, we deliver more than 25 targeted internal training programmes, which strengthen both technical expertise and leadership capabilities,” she explains. Mentoring, annual performance reviews and clearly defined career pathways support continuous growth and professional development and the company also invests in meaningful development opportunities through initiatives such as Engineers of the Future and the NextGen Construction Internship.

N. Psaras Construction views the workplace “as a key factor in both wellbeing and performance” and the Compliance & Administration Manager elaborates on this, saying, “Our offices have a strong personal aspect, as they are housed in what was the founder’s grandmother’s home, which has been carefully restored to combine respect for tradition with modern functionality.” The company’s participation in Open House Nicosia led to it being opened to the public as an example of how architectural heritage and contemporary practice can combine successfully. “The integration of preserved historical elements into modern workspaces enhances productivity, encourages collaboration and creates an environment that inspires and fosters a sense of pride,” says Psara. Noting the importance of one particular detail, Psara highlights a sentiment shared by company CEO Afrodite Psara, who says: “It goes without saying that an office can’t be great … without a good coffee machine and good quality coffee!”

N. Psaras Construction measures employee engagement and fulfilment through the Great Place to Work survey, where scores consistently reach 95%-96%, reflecting a strong level of trust and satisfaction. “This has translated into targeted improvements, including enhanced benefits, expanded training programmes and stronger internal communication,” she says.

Perks and benefits are a key part of the overall employee experience and Psara reveals that, in addition to competitive compensation, the company offers a comprehensive package covering equipment, transport and communication tools that support daily work. “We also invest in initiatives that strengthen connection and recognition, such as Employee Appreciation Day and team activities. In collaboration with management, the HR function is continuously exploring new opportunities to evolve and enhance our benefits offering,” she says.

Asked to identify what sets N. Psaras Construction apart, Evangelia Psara points to the company’s genuine commitment to its people as the key to its success. This people-centric approach, combined with continuous investment in development, wellbeing and inclusion, has led to repeated Great Place to Work certifications and a ‘Best Workplace in Cyprus’ award. “Our people do not simply remain with the company; they grow with it and take pride in being part of an organisation that is defined by strong values and a clear forward direction,” she says.
