National Council to convene to discuss the outcome of the President's Brussels contacts

The National Council, top advisory body to the President of the Republic on the handling of the Cyprus question, will convene this morning, Monday, 23 March, under President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis has said that President Christodoulides is expected to inform the members of the Council about the outcome of the contacts he held in Brussels last week, where he participated in the European Council.

He will also inform them about the meeting he held with UN Secretary General, António Guterres.

In Brussels, the President also met with President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, participated in the Tripartite Social Summit and had a series of other high-level contacts.

The National Council is scheduled for 10 in the morning.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

The Republic of Cyprus currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU for a six-month term that started on January 1st, 2026, as part of a Trio Presidency along with Poland and Denmark.
