The position that "promoting sustainable mobility is a key priority for reducing emissions and improving the quality of life of citizens" was stated by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works of the Republic of Cyprus Alexis Vafeades within the framework of the 'Climate Neutral Blue Cities by 2030: Accelerating Local Change under the EU Cities and Ocean Missions - Limassol on the Path to Climate Neutrality' conference.
During his speech, Vafeades referred to the crucial role of cities in addressing the climate crisis, noting that the transport sector, and in particular the dependence on the private car, contributes significantly to pollutant emissions and traffic problems.
As he explained, a key tool for addressing these challenges is the implementation of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans, focusing on the Limassol plan, which includes actions to strengthen public transport, promote active mobility and create integrated transport hubs.
At the same time, he noted that specific projects that directly affect the daily lives of citizens are already being implemented, such as the creation of bus lanes and bicycle infrastructure, the development of Park and Ride areas, as well as the upgrading of bus stops throughout Cyprus, with hundreds of interventions already completed in Limassol.
In this context, he continued, the use of smart transport systems and digital technologies contributes to improving traffic management and reducing energy consumption, while these actions are part of a broader European and national strategic plan for climate neutrality.
Finally, Vafeades stated that the transition to more sustainable cities is an opportunity for a better quality of life, emphasizing the need for cooperation between the state, local authorities and society, so that Limassol can develop into a model city for the green transition in the Mediterranean region.
The conference was organised by the Limassol Municipality.
