From yesterday's builder to tomorrow's contractor: Sustainable development, technology and extroversion

The prospects and challenges that are shaping up for the  construction sector in Cyprus were highlighted by a fireside chat entitled 'Building Cyprus: Prospects and the Future of the Construction Industry', as part of the 20th Real Estate, Property Development & Construction Conference & Exhibition, organised by Altia.

The discussion was attended by the President, Federation of Building Contractors Associations of Cyprus (OSEOK), Managing Director, N. Gavriel & Sons Ltd, Stelios Gavriel, BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering.

As Gavriel pointed out, the history of Cypriot contractors is inextricably linked to the development of the country, from the first builders of the 1930s to the modern construction industry. Their contribution includes the reconstruction of houses, schools, roads, ports and infrastructure that shaped cities and communities, but also supporting the economy in difficult periods, such as after 1974 and through work on major projects abroad.

Today, the contractor is not just a craftsman but a modern entrepreneur who manages complex projects, large teams and significant investments, combining technical knowledge, financial management, strategic planning and decision-making skills. He uses new technologies, digital tools and modern construction methods, while having to adapt to international economic turbulence, changes in material prices and the supply chain.

The sector is also called upon to enhance credibility and transparency through the modernisation of public procurement, based on international standards, and by implementing modern dispute resolution methods, in order to minimise delays and problems in the implementation of projects.

The industry has matured and has the knowledge and experience to evolve further. The key to a better future is to regain trust between all stakeholders, both in the private and public sectors, strengthen cooperation and continuously train new professionals. Through this, the quality of projects and the improvement of the daily lives of citizens will be ensured, leaving a positive imprint on the upgrading of the country.

Gavriel also stressed the need for extroversion. He explained that the Cypriot market is small, and empowering companies to operate abroad will create healthier, more competitive and sustainable businesses. Supporting young professionals, introducing new ideas and adopting innovations will allow the construction sector to continue to contribute to the development of Cyprus.

In closing, he sent the clear message that the vision for the contractor of tomorrow includes a complete professional, technician, entrepreneur and creator of development, capable of implementing high-quality, sustainable, innovative and adapted projects to the needs of society and the economy.

The discussion was moderated by the Chief Editor of InBusinessNews, George Angastiniotis.
