The Future of Accounting Is Here

We live in a time when organisations operate in an environment of constant and rapid change, from digital transformation to the challenges of the climate crisis. The role of professionals in finance and accounting is no longer limited to technical knowledge and accuracy. Today it requires adaptability, insight and leadership with a forward-looking perspective.

In this context, ICAEW introduces the updated ACA programme, a meaningful response to the needs of the modern business environment. The new programme has been shaped through extensive consultation with employers, students and educational partners, evolving an already globally recognised qualification.

This upgrade marks a new era for the accounting profession. The changes strengthen the relevance and impact of the ACA, preparing future ICAEW Chartered Accountants to create value, manage complexity and uphold the highest standards of integrity.

The new ACA combines the programme’s well-known rigour and credibility with a modern structure and content that reflect the needs of today’s organisations. Updated and future-ready, the Next Generation ACA offers a transformative learning experience that develops technical capability, business thinking and strong ethical foundations, the essential qualities for tomorrow’s professionals.

Redefining Accounting Education

The Next Generation ACA redesigns the core elements of the programme, placing the demands of modern work at the centre, both in the corporate environment and in professional practice. It takes a forward-looking approach by embedding sustainability, ethics and technology across every aspect of the learning experience.

The programme is structured around three core pillars:

  • Exams in business, finance and accounting
  • Specialised Learning
  • Professional skills and practical experience

Deepening Knowledge with Flexibility and Progression

The new ACA includes 14 updated exams designed to support smooth and progressive development, without compromising learning outcomes. The programme maintains its flexibility, allowing students to choose the order of exams according to their own pace and schedule.

The exams are organised across three levels:

Certificate Level

A new module introduces the fundamental principles of sustainability and professional ethics, laying the foundations for the next stages.

Professional Level

The Fundamental Case Study connects theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing students for more complex professional challenges.

Advanced Level

Two Case Studies assess both technical expertise and strategic capability, simulating complex business scenarios and real-world challenges.

Innovation in Professional Development

Specialised Learning is one of the most innovative pillars of the new programme. Through a wide range of interactive modules, students can deepen their knowledge in specialist technical areas, explore sector-specific topics and engage with emerging trends and technological developments.

This learning model allows both students and employers to tailor development to individual needs, encouraging early specialisation while maintaining flexibility in the learning journey.

Students will complete at least 30 Specialised Learning credits during the programme, with each credit representing approximately one hour of training. This structure keeps the ACA dynamic, allowing new topics and emerging challenges to be incorporated in real time.

Preparing the Leaders of Tomorrow

Professional skills development and practical experience remain central to the ACA qualification. The new skills framework includes 25 competencies, assessed across three levels of proficiency and organised into five key areas:

  • Communication
  • Critical thinking
  • Leadership
  • Professionalism
  • Understanding yourself and others

Through this framework, students develop the capabilities needed to lead, collaborate effectively and make responsible decisions. At the same time, they gain valuable professional experience through at least 450 days of work with an Authorised Training Employer as part of a programme lasting three to five years.

From December 2025, a new Technology Hub will provide even greater opportunities to develop digital skills through virtual environments and simulated datasets. This will allow students to experiment and build technological understanding through practical application.

A Programme Designed for the Future

The Next Generation ACA represents a holistic redesign of how future accountants are trained and developed.

Combining technical expertise, professional confidence and digital adaptability, future ICAEW Chartered Accountants will be ready to act as strategic thinkers, drivers of change and leaders of growth, professionals capable of guiding organisations with integrity, vision and a clear understanding of the future.
