A new generation of fuels is set to enter the flights of the future, with some of them produced from organic waste, food scraps, and even street food. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), or sustainable aviation fuel, is one of the most promising solutions for reducing aviation's environmental footprint and achieving cleaner flights.
SAF is produced from renewable raw materials, such as vegetable and animal fat waste, used cooking oils, municipal organic waste and other non-food raw materials. It can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80% over its entire life cycle. It is blended with conventional fuels without significant modifications to aircraft and is a key tool for achieving climate neutrality in aviation by 2050, without sacrificing flight functionality. For the passenger, this means flights with a lower environmental impact, without compromising on comfort or travel distance.
With SAF becoming more widespread, a journey that currently runs on conventional fuel could very soon be partially or entirely powered by sustainable sources.
